What is a tipping shoe cabinet and why does it need professional assembly?
A tipping (or flip-front) shoe cabinet has a hinged front panel that drops down to reveal and dispense shoes. The panel is held by a spring or gas piston that controls the drop speed. If the spring tension is not set correctly, the panel slams open (banging against the floor, damaging the cabinet) or does not open fully. Setting the correct spring tension for the cabinet's door weight takes experience — there is no precise instruction in most manuals.
My HDB entryway is very narrow. Can a shoe cabinet be assembled inside and then pushed to the wall?
Yes — for flat-back cabinets without protrusions. For tipping cabinets, the tipping mechanism needs floor clearance in front of the cabinet, so placement position matters. For a typical 3-room HDB corridor (about 1 m wide), a tipping cabinet with 30 cm of drop clearance can work with 70 cm of corridor remaining. We measure before finalising position.
Does a shoe cabinet need to be wall-anchored?
Any shoe cabinet taller than 1.2 m should be wall-anchored, particularly in households with children or elderly. A fully loaded tall shoe cabinet (8–10 pairs per tier, 5–6 tiers) can weigh 40–60 kg. IKEA includes an anti-tip strap in the box — we install it correctly into concrete, not plasterboard.
