Do I really need to anchor a bookshelf to the wall?
A fully loaded BILLY bookshelf (6 shelves of books) weighs approximately 80–100 kg. The centre of gravity is high. A lateral force of 15 kg — easily applied by a child pulling on a lower shelf — can tip it. IKEA includes an anti-tip fitting in the BILLY box for this reason. We install it into the concrete wall stud behind your HDB wall, not into plasterboard or with adhesive. The fitting is then actually load-bearing.
How long does IKEA BILLY bookshelf assembly take?
A single BILLY unit takes 30–45 minutes. A full wall of four BILLYs with height extensions and OXBERG doors takes 3–4 hours. If you are adding BILLY height extensions, the extension must be attached before the anchor fitting — the sequence matters. We follow the correct build order every time.
Can you assemble a KALLAX unit as a TV console or room divider?
Yes. KALLAX used as a room divider must be anchored — to a wall on at least one end, or with a stabilising top fixed to a ceiling batten. A free-standing KALLAX loaded with books and records is not stable. We assess your layout and anchor accordingly.
My wall is a light partition — can you still anchor the bookshelf?
Yes. For plasterboard partition walls, we locate the metal stud behind the board with a stud finder and anchor into that. If studs are not in a useful position, we use toggle bolts rated to the expected load. We will not anchor into plasterboard cavity only — and we will tell you honestly if a safe anchor is not possible in your specific wall.
